Channels & Conflict: Response to Digital Media Distribution, Impact on Sales and Internet PiracyDec 03, 2011
Google Tech Talk August 17, 2010 ABSTRACT "Channels & Conflict: Consumer Response to Digital Media Distribution, and its Impact on Physical Sales and Internet Piracy" Presented by Michael D. Smith, with introduction by Hal Varian. The availability of digital channels for media distribution has raised several important questions for marketers, notably whether digital distribution channels will cannibalize physical sales and whether legitimate digital distribution channels will dissuade consumers from using (illegitimate) digital piracy channels. We examine these two questions using a series of "natural experiments" involving changes in the distribution of media on digital channels. Our results suggest that (1) online "free" distribution can complement legitimate purchases of media goods, (2) legitimate digital distribution channels can reduce the demand for piracy, and (3) that digital distribution is unlikely to cannibalize sales in physical channels in the short-term. Michael D. Smith is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Marketing and co-director of the Center for Digital Media Research at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Smith's research relates to analyzing structure and competition in online markets and substitution effects between legitimate digital distribution channels, piracy channels, and physical channels for media products. His research in this area has been published by outlets including The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Sloan Management ...

Marketing Tools-mix as a planning tool -(2)www.MarketingPlanNOW.comJan 05, 2012
For many, marketing is all about the 4P's, a theoretical concept dated early 60's. This second video (out of two) demonstrates how the modern concept of marketing-mix can assist you practically as a major planning tool in a marketing plan. This second video (out of two) illustrates the elements of marketing communication (MarCom) or MarCom-mix: Advertising, public relations, sales promotions, conventions & exhibitions and sponsorships. Furthermore, it includes the concept of marketing-mix when adapted to services rather than products. This video ends with practical examples of how to use the concept of marketing-mix. Should I pick one video platform and stick with it?Feb 22, 2012
Andrew Davis, Chief Strategy Officer for Tippingpoint Labs, answers the question: "Should I pick one video platform and stick with it?" This is a great question. When it comes to choosing any content distribution channel, I think it's really important to define exactly what kind of content you're trying to distribute and who you are trying to reach. For example, 5min.com is the right place to distribute any video in which you want to teach someone how to do something in five minutes or less. However, 12seconds.tv is a great way to create short video content on a daily basis designed to deliver your thought of the day. I also think it's good to diversify your risk. What I mean here is that let's say you put all your video onto Vimeo. If Vimeo goes down or goes out of business, you lose all of your video. The only way to mitigate this kind of risk is to diversify your distribution of video across multiple platforms that make sense based on the content and the audience that is consuming the content. So, should you pick only one video distribution platform and stick with it? No. You should conscientiously pick the right platforms -- and be sure to experiment. You might be surprised to see that some of the smaller video sites deliver better relationships based on the quality of your content and their distribution channel.
